    The new set is installed and wound with proper bars to the calculated turns, then the drums are set so both cables wind evenly. On a wide door, even winding is what keeps the leaf square.

  4. Test balance, then the operator

    The door is cycled by hand and should hold position when raised halfway. Only once it does is the operator reconnected, and its force settings and safety reversal are then tested.

One spring broke on my double door. Do I have to replace both?
In practice it is almost always the right call. The two coils were installed together, have taken the same number of cycles under the same load, and are made of the same wire, so a single replacement means an old and a new spring sharing one door with different remaining lives and different output. That makes the lift uneven, which on a wide leaf loads one track harder, and it usually means a second visit before long.
Are higher-cycle springs worth paying for?
It depends entirely on how the door is used. A garage that is the household's main entrance, cycling five or six times a day, gets through a standard rating much faster than one that opens twice, and a higher-cycle set changes that arithmetic meaningfully. On a door opened twice a day the standard specification may last longer than you intend to own the house. We will give you the comparison in cycles rather than a recommendation without numbers.
Can I replace a torsion spring myself?
We would strongly advise against it. The winding process holds substantial stored energy, the correct bars are specific tools rather than something improvised, and the calculation, wire size, length, inside diameter and turns against measured door weight, has to be right before the winding starts. The failure mode is not a broken part but an injury. This is genuinely the one job on a garage door worth handing over.
Will new springs fix a noisy door?
Partly, and often less than people expect. A fresh spring set removes the groaning and the shuddering that come from an unbalanced door fighting itself, but the rattling, squealing and grinding usually come from dry roller bearings, loose hinges or track that has drifted out of alignment. We inspect all of it while the door is open, because doing the springs and leaving worn rollers in place is how you end up disappointed with a good repair.
