View serviceA dead remote is one of the few garage door problems that is often genuinely trivial. The trick is proving which trivial thing it is.
Test the hard-wired wall button first. If it works, the fault is in the remote, its programming or the radio path: change the battery, reprogram the remote to the operator following the manual, check the hanging antenna wire on the operator is intact and extended, and switch off any LED bulbs in the garage to test for interference. If the wall button does not work either, the operator or its power supply is the problem rather than the remote.
Remote faults divide cleanly, and one test does most of the sorting: try the hard-wired wall control. If the wall button works and the remote does not, the problem is in the remote, its programming or the radio path between the two. If neither works, the issue is the operator, its power supply or its logic board, and the remote is innocent. From there the likely causes are a flat battery, lost programming after a power event, a receiving antenna damaged or curled up, radio interference from an LED lamp or a nearby transmitter, or a receiver that has genuinely failed. Working in that order costs nothing and frequently ends at the first step, which is a better outcome than replacing a working unit.
Start at the top. The early checks are the most common causes and need no tools.
Press the hard-wired button inside the garage. This single test splits the fault in two: a working wall button means the door, the operator and the power are fine and the issue is on the radio side, while a dead wall button points at the operator, its board or its supply.
What it means: Wall button works and remote does not: the fault is radio or programming.
Fit a fresh battery of the correct type rather than one from a drawer, check the contacts for corrosion and the orientation, and press firmly. A weak battery often produces the classic symptom of working from three feet and not from the driveway before it fails outright.
What it means: Shrinking range followed by nothing is nearly always a battery.
Follow the manufacturer's sequence, typically pressing the learn button on the operator and then the remote within a set number of seconds. Programming can be lost after a power surge or a board reset, and a second remote or keypad is a useful control: if one works and another does not, the operator is fine.
What it means: Successful reprogramming confirms the receiver and the remote are both alive.
Most operators have a short wire antenna hanging from the housing. Make sure it hangs free and is not broken, taped up or coiled. Then switch off LED or fluorescent lamps in the garage and retest, because some LED bulbs emit enough radio noise to cut a remote's range dramatically.
What it means: Range that returns with the lights off means interference, not a faulty remote.
An outside keypad and a built-in vehicle transmitter each have their own programming and their own battery in some cases. Testing them tells you whether one transmitter has failed or whether the operator's receiver has stopped hearing anything at all.
What it means: If no transmitter works but the wall button does, the receiver is the suspect.
This is the least hazardous guide on the site, with two exceptions. Do not open the operator housing while it is connected to power, because the internal capacitor and the motor can move the drive unexpectedly. And do not use a remote fault as a reason to disable a safety device: if the door will not close and you have been told the remote is at fault, check the photo eyes rather than looking for a way around them. If at any point the door itself behaves oddly, moving unevenly, straining or making a new noise, stop treating this as a radio problem.
Two Burlington patterns are worth knowing. In the attached-housing parts of the city, Uptown has no detached homes at all with row housing at 63 percent of dwellings, and Tansley Woods runs 41 percent low-rise condominium and 40 percent row houses, so transmitters, keypads and receivers are packed close together on adjoining frontages and get used far more often than on a detached street. High cycle counts wear out wall controls and keypads first. In the older north-west, Mountainside has 90 percent of its dwellings built before 1981 and detached garages are common, which puts more distance and more wall between a driveway and a receiver, so range problems show up earlier there.
