  3. Adjust, or say it plainly

    Where the spring is sound, tension is adjusted in measured increments with the door retested by hand between them. Where it is not, we say so rather than chasing balance on a coil that is finished.

  4. Confirm and reconnect

    Level travel, equal cable tension on both sides and settled behaviour at rest are checked before the operator goes back on, and then its force settings and safety reversal are verified.

How can I tell if my door needs adjustment or new springs?
Start with the visible condition of the coil. A clean spring with no gap, no separation and no heavy pitting, on a door that has simply lost its balance, is often an adjustment. A coil with a visible break, a gap between windings or significant corrosion is a replacement. Weighing the door and reading how it behaves by hand confirms which case you are actually in, and that test takes minutes.
Can tension be increased so the opener has an easier time?
Correct balance is exactly what makes a door easy for an operator, so in that sense yes: proper tension removes load the motor should never have been carrying. What adjustment cannot do is compensate for a leaf that is heavier than the spring was ever sized for. On a wide double that has had sections replaced or insulation added, the honest answer is usually a spring matched to the door's real weight.
Why is my door fine in summer and heavy in winter?
Cold affects the whole assembly at once. Grease thickens, steel contracts slightly, rollers and bearings turn less freely, and a spring already near the limit of its output has less margin left.
