How often should a garage door be serviced?

Do not put anything on the track face, because grease there collects grit and abrades the rollers you are trying to protect. Avoid heavy general-purpose oils that attract dust, and wipe off the excess. A light annual application in autumn, before the cold, is more effective than a heavy one at any other time.
Is a tune-up worth it on a door that seems fine?
Usually, because the failures worth avoiding are the ones with no warning you would notice. A spring near the end of its cycles, a cable with broken strands at the drum wrap, or a safety reversal that has quietly stopped working all present as a door that seems fine. The check either finds something, in which case you have gained the choice of when to deal with it, or finds nothing, in which case you know where you stand.
