The cable bends over the same groove on every cycle, and after enough repetitions the strands at that point fatigue and begin to break. It is the single most common place a cable fails.

Corrosion at the bottom bracket

A spring failure moved the load

When a spring breaks, the cables absorb forces they were never asked for. A cable that survives the event is often damaged by it, and fails weeks later for no apparent reason.

Drum or track misalignment

    Cables are replaced in pairs because both have done identical work. The drums are checked for wear in the grooves, correct position on the shaft and secure set screws.

  3. Fit, seat and equalise

    New cables are fitted, seated in their grooves and wound so both sides carry the same length and the same tension. On a wide door that equalisation is what stops the leaf leading on one side.

  4. Cycle and verify

    The door is run by hand and then under power, watching cable behaviour at both ends of travel, and the operator's force settings and safety reversal are checked before the visit closes.

One cable is loose. Can I still use the door until someone comes?
No, and this is one of the few places we would say that flatly. With one cable slack the whole weight of the door is being carried on the other side, and each cycle pulls the leaf further out of square. What starts as a cable replacement becomes bent sections, damaged track and a door jammed at an angle. Leave it where it is, park outside if you can, and describe the position when you book.
Why replace both cables when only one broke?
Because both have done exactly the same number of cycles under the same load, over the same drums, in the same damp garage. The surviving cable is the same age and the same condition as the one that failed, and it has just absorbed the shock of its partner letting go. Replacing the pair keeps the two sides matched in length and tension, which is what keeps a wide door square in its tracks.
Can a frayed cable be repaired rather than replaced?
Not usefully. A cable is a bundle of strands sharing a load, and once strands have broken the remaining ones carry more than they were rated for at the very point already proven to be the weakest. There is no splice or clamp that restores the original capacity in a safety-critical lifting application. Cables are inexpensive relative to the damage a failure causes, so replacement is both the safe and the sensible answer.
How often should cables be checked?
Once a year is a reasonable rhythm, and autumn is the sensible month because it puts the check ahead of the season when the fittings near the floor spend most of their time wet. Look at the last hand-span of cable above each bottom bracket and at the wrap point on each drum, with the door closed and the light behind you. Broken strands, flattening, kinks and rust staining are all worth a call.
